This will save you the effort of focusing on the letters, and just surrender to the reader, and get convinced, carried away, excited, (disgusted?) by the reader’s tone.

My recommendation for listening to books, is to have them play once while you are totally focused. Then play the same book several times in the background. This way, information will effortlessly sink in, and your unconscious will alert you immediately whenever something significant is being said.
