One of the favorite services that I like to provide, is working with rich content, and reproducing it using a different culture (note: I didn’t say language). Providing companies with copy that conveys the meaning they want while taking into consideration the cultural aspects of both languages, is an absolute must in the translation of copy.
Translation does not only mean conveying the same meaning using proper grammar. The process needs to go beyond this, by first understanding the ideas in the source language, then formulating them in the target language while thinking in that language.
Thinking in different languages means being able to talk to the culture, values, and norms of the target language. Good knowledge of the language only is not enough. Don’t think bilingual, think bicultural.
Since advertisements, copy, and commercially targeted content tends to be short, these points gain more importance. You are limited with space, and time (if its is an audio or a video copy), and you don’t have the luxury of going around phrases and colloquial language.
I provide translation for English, Arabic and Turkish.
English: I started learning English since I was in kindergarten. It stayed with me all the time. GCE, university, movies, books, ever heard of globalization??
Arabic: This is my mother language, and I have been using it all my life.
Turkish: A language that opened many doors to me, through which I understood the importance of culture in the development of one’s personality. As Goethe said, “One can never understand his own language without learning a foreign language.”
